The Promise of the Restoration of Worship (Part I)

John 2

14 (21) And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables.
15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables;
16 and to those who were selling (22) the doves He said,
"Take these things away; stop making (23) My Father's house a place of business."

Jesus visited the temple in Jerusalem shortly before the Passover. He drove out those selling sacrificial animals and the folks who were converting the currency of those that had travelled some distance to worship there. Regarding the purchase of animals and / or coverting one's currency -- these were a matter of practicality and of convenience for the worshippers who had travelled a distance.

Were the businessmen charging exorbitant rates to the travellers? -- probably as in another account Jesus refers to a "den of thieves." But Jesus was not condemning the practice of the travellers, per se. Rather he was concerned that the temple was not the place for any such exchanges to be taking place at all. Such business should have been transacted BEFORE coming to the temple to worship. The presence of these things had "tarnished" and "prevented" true worship from taking place. IN another passage, Jesus said that His Father's house would be a house of prayer -- a place to seek and worship God.

Calling into question, Jesus' right to do this -- the Jews asked for a sign. Jesus said "Destroy this temple and in 3 days I will raise it up." referring to his body.

Jesus took these men to the heart of the matter -- his actions were figurative -- body == temple.

Our bodies are meant to be a place where God is worshipped.
Is some house-cleaning in order today??

Jesus made a whip of cords and his approach may have seemed quite violent to some -- maybe even his recently acquired disciples -- but he didn't take anything away from anybody or injure anybody unduly -- but he was forceful ... it was serious work which he was passionate about: Restoring True Worship ... He might want to make some big changes at our houses or in our temples, too.
