Just recall that the Palestinians were present in Israel for at least as long as the vast majority of its Jewish inhabitants

Most importantly, the indigenous Jews of Palestine were vehemently anti-Zionist. They strongly supported the PLO in its call for a secular state in all of Palestine in which Jews, Muslims, and Christians would have equal rights. Of course, in 1976, the PLO gave up this idea because it became apparent that the Zionists wold never agree to it. At that point, the PLO began to call for two separate states , including full recognition of Israel.
