<Israel is not the 51st state >
What the U.S. gets, is contained in the last sentence of my post: Israel could trade Land For Peace, without sacrificing Security.
Both sides in the Israeli-Arab conflict would be more likely to compromise, thus making a comprehensive peace a lot easier to achieve. The Arabs would see that they will never "push the Jews into the sea", the hope of ever doing that will fade. The Israelis will feel a lot more secure, knowing that any attempt to end the Jewish State, will get the same response the Japanese got after Pearl Harbor. The main reason the Israelis (under the Likud governments), have been unwilling to do a LandForPeace deal is because they are sceptical they really get Peace or Security. A guarantee by the U.S., is a lot more reliable than Arafat's signature on a peace treaty. So Israel could give a demilitarized Palestinian State Gaza, 95% of the West Bank, E. Jerusalem, and still feel secure.
If we annexed Israel, we would have a comprehensive peace treaty within a year.
Settling the Israili-Arab war, and establishing a Palestinian State, will make it much, much easier for the U.S. to attract allies in the Muslim world (and Europe also), in our broader War On Islamism.
Another reason is, in any future ME war, we would have built-in access to the region. Jordan would almost certainly become a permanent client state, having a relationship with the U.S. much like Canada does. So we would have borders with a group of potential targets, able to exert leverage without first needing to negotiate with wobbly allies like Turkey and Saudi Arabia. |
