My sense is he's just a lost, spoiled Marin County kid who had no frame of reference to realize how serious a mess he was getting himself into. You could say he was overtken by events.

Now he's paying for it. Big time. I'd venture to say that unless he's placed in a protected unit, he won't make it out alive.
