Is the despotic Saddam losing his grip on Baghdad?

Baghdad's citizens are acting in away that indicate that they do not expect Saddam to be around for much longer.

One important and very visible signal has been the real estate boom that starting to sweep the country once Iraqis became persuaded that President Bush and Prime Minister Blair meant what they said about overthrowing Saddam. This suggests that Iraqis expect the war to be short and civilian casualties and the damage to property to be minimal.

One other signal is also beginning to make itself felt. There is growing evidence that the Saddam is running into passive resistance. For the first time that anyone can remember, anti-Saddam and anti-Baathist signs are appearing in towns and cities, including Baghdad.

That Iraqis have been so emboldened indicates that the populace is not only shedding its fear of Saddam but that his security forces are losing their enthusiasm for hunting down dissidents.

That this may be the case is strengthened by reports from Iraqi exiles who claim that relatives and friends with whom they are in phone contact no longer try to hide their opinions, even openly asking, "when will the American arrive?"

Among Iraqi exiles this is considered an amazing turn of events considering that every Iraqi phone is said to be tapped. If the reports are accurate, and exiles excitedly say they are, then Saddam's secret police must be deliberately ignoring these challenges to his authority.

The only thing that can account for Saddam's thugs sudden reluctance to enforce his oppressive measures is that they have taken seriously Bush and Blair's threats about war crimes trials.

This can only mean that they expect to see American and British troops enter Baghdad very, very soon. Perhaps these thugs have decided that this is the time to hunt for bolt holes and not opponents who will soon be in charge.

One thing can be said with absolute certainty. The so-called the peace movement, the one Saddam fulsomely thanked, and its human shields had nothing to do with the Saddam's agents sudden desire to exercise restraint.
