Western Wireless International does not believe that there is a business case to justify developing 3G services in Austria, despite the fact that the company holds a 3G licence via tele.ring (Austria), mobile, Internet and fixed-line service provider. Western Wireless also believes that there is no case for 3G services in any of the other six markets where it operates, including Ireland, which there company holds a majority stake in Meteor, cellular operator which did not bid for a 3G licence. Western Wireless believes that take up of 3G services will be driven by the first and second-ranked operators in each country. Instead of focusing on 3G technologies, Western Wireless is examining alternative technologies, including EDGE.
