It now appears there were two reasons for the press conference: 1. To let security counsel members know that Bush will push for a vote and force those who are still wavering to take a stand. 2. To distract Americans from what was announced this morning--a huge increase in unemployment, particularly a big loss in non-farm payrolls. Maybe with all the talk about war, no one will notice. . . I caught another pressure point on Turkey in Bush's comments last night. He said he was all for Turkey joining the European Union--a clear message that if Turkey allowed itself to be used as a staging point, the U.S. would exert pressure on the EU to admit Turkey. Of course, the U.S. now has very little influence on the EU, having turned against the European approved Kyoto treaty, and having abandoned the nuclear proliferation treaty. Frankly, while Turkey might reconsider its earlier vote against U.S. forces, the EU really doesn't want a Muslim country in its little club. If we ever thought the U.S. was anti-muslim, it doesn't compare with the long term European opposition to cultures different from its own. Art
