Instead of swallowing everything coming out of the President's mouth, why not consider one question he failed to answer: Why invade now? To answer simply, and over and over, that Iraq failed to comply with a Security Council mandate trivializes the problem. The real question is whether there is a better way to remove Saddam than by force from the U.S. The answer is that of course there are many better ways, but when one seeks a diplomatic resolution, labeling the neighbors as part of an axis of evil doesn't do much for creating coalitions and consensus. If you didn't see the interview on the Lehrer report last night with the Iranian Minister of Justice (American educated), you really missed something. He pointed out that Iran had sent the U.S. a strong message of interest in cooperating against terrorism when it arrested several terrorists who had fled to Iran and turned them over to the appropriate authorities. He then went on to say that America (meaning Bush and his advisors) have a paranoia over this and related issues, which prevents them from taking CONSTRUCTIVE diplomatic moves. The Iranian was really saying (backed up by comments of the Iranian president), "We don't like Saddam any more than you do. After all, he killed Iranians with bombs and chemical weapons. We're ready to help remove him, but you won't listen to anyone or seek help from anyone because of your paranoia." I've worked for years in the Foreign Service. Believe me, there are better ways of handling this situation than war. Those who don't understand or are unwilling to accept any policy other than war probably had no training or education in foreign affairs but simply relied on their own version of fundamentalism to approve of the war alternative.
