Rob, I am not brave enough to deal with options. I just shorted it, which means I can buy it back any time I want.

Thanks for the info on Merced.

From a technical standpoint there is a lot to like about DEC, even now. DEC HAD a huge technology lead when the Alphas came out. They did not (still do not) seem to know how to market the technology. Even DEC conceded they had a very difficult time getting market acceptance for the Alphas. I have a 266 MHZ Alpha NT box at home (in pieces). I got a great deal on a new one last month. After playing with it for a few days Idecided to cannibalize it for parts (nice video card and monitor!). Not much software made for Alpha NT, and if you use DEC's intel emulation software performance is less than impressive.

Their Hudson Fab is still arguably one of the most sophisticated in the world. But the competitors are closing the gap on the technology.

If you want to know what I mean by margin and the competition, just look at the prices in any recent DECDirect catalog.

As for VMS, it ain't dead but that's not through DEC's choice. When they announced their change in strategy I was consulting with a LARGE DEC customer at the time. This customer told DEC point blank that "the change was very disturbing and could be cause for re-evaluation of the relationship with DEC".
