Generally, infrastructure vendors have to wait for industry groups and standards committees to add improvements and new features to technology protocols. But an industry gorilla like Cisco can wade in and create its own standard additions, reinforcing its market position in the process. Last week, Cisco announced that it has launched the Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) program under which it will license to silicon developers and vendors, its proprietary IP for a series of extensions to the vanilla IEEE 802.11 standards. Already it has signed up all the key players; Agere Systems, Atheros, Atmel, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Marvell, and notably Texas Instruments and Intel. IDC estimates these eight companies account for 90 percent of WLAN designs on the market today, and IBM and HP have already said that they will have CCX compliant laptops available by the end of the year. This program has some heavy weight industry traction. <<
