Yes, these passing of the 'lasts' makes for some reflection. The last Aussie vet from Gallipoli died last year; the last fighter pilot from WWI died a couple of months ago. I have a newspaper clipping from maybe a dozen years ago, noting the death of the last Boer War vet. We had an old guy here, a real character -- Tom Spear. WWI vet, he made the news when he renewed his driver's licence at age 100, so he could get to the golf course. His last four years he was a real celebrity. I tried to impress on my kids how amazing it was that their lives overlapped with someone with those experiences.
