Mosque masks murder money

New York Daily News ^ | 3/06/03

Brooklyn's Al Farooq mosque is not a gateway to eternal paradise. It's a gateway to Al Qaeda. It must be treated as such. The feds must find a way to shut its doors and seal them. For good. For the good of the country that has so graciously allowed it to operate under constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion.

Please note: The First Amendment does not guarantee the freedom to fund, under the guise of religion, the mass murder of Americans. Or the overthrow of the government. Which is exactly the ultimate aim of Islamic militants.

According to federal investigators, worshipers in the tax-exempt Al Farooq mosque raised a sizeable chunk of the $20 million a Muslim cleric sent to Osama Bin Laden - money that helped deploy terrorists to crash planes into buildings.

This mosque has been a terrorist sanctuary for more than a decade. Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, convicted in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, was its prayer leader in 1990. Now, the Justice Department has arrested Sheik Mohammed Al Hasan Al-Moayad, who told an FBI informant in Germany that he used the mosque to funnel cash to Bin Laden before 9/11. And he bragged that he supplied the world's most wanted fugitive with recruits and weapons.

While Al-Moayad is charged with providing support to a foreign terrorist organization, the Justice Department can't charge the mosque as the source of this support. Solution? Turn the matter over to the Treasury Department. That's how the feds got Al Capone - on tax-evasion charges. They should go after the mosque for abusing its tax-exempt status.

Or the feds could use the laws they employed to crack down on New York mobsters. John Gotti's Ravenite club on Mulberry St. was confiscated under forfeiture laws. Today, it's a fashion boutique. Since the terror cells that use the Brooklyn mosque differ little from organized crime crews, the property should be seized as an instrument that raised proceeds for criminal activities.

A spokesman for the mosque says it complies with the regulations for tax-exempt organizations. Yet it allowed terrorists to meet and raise money there. These supposedly religious men have abused our nation's freedoms in an effort to destroy those freedoms.

The clerics say they are shocked - shocked! - that terror money was raised in their mosque. Perhaps they should read their own sermons, which often rail against America. They can't preach jihad and act surprised when their worshipers follow their advice.

In America, there is separation of church and state. There must also be a separation of church and murder.
