I've suspect that US covert operaters have always peeled skin as standard procedure - or paid someone for the pleasure.

However, they remained in the shadows, behind a public veneer of civility.

What is remarkable to me are shameless innuendo and cryptic admissions by politicians wearing revenge-grin masks.

And on cable news TV, they snicker at prisoners shipped off to third world dungeons, and joke of their fate with embarrassed laughter...

I think these are important milestones.

They document what it is that we become.

They mark the price of Empire.
