Well, if the U.S. was serious about getting off oil for national security purposes, I mean really serious. Perhaps the government would MANDATE that a certain percentage of gas stations would have to provide hydrogen by 2005. I know you guys hate government mandates, but would you rather fight more wars for oil? And at the same time, encourage automakers to bring fuel cells or engines that run on hydrogen to the market. Perhaps by offering $10 Billion a year in research assistance. We're about to spend $100 Billion (at least) on Iraq, $10 B isn't all that much in the grand scheme of things, especially if it really brought about a changeover to a hydrogen economy. Once proven, and if cost effective, the hydrogen cars and economy might really displace gasoline. Bush's proposal in the State of the Union was really just a token to make it look like he's doing something about the promise of hydrogen; $1.5 Billion a year with no mandates. The oil companies, who are some of his biggest backers, would never stand for a serious effort like I outlined above. It just won't happen as long as the U.S. government is in their pocket.
