BP is a big investor in fuel cell development... to name just one.

That's likely because (although in the long run the hydrogen to fuel these cells may be extracted directly from water), in the early going fuel cells may use 'reformers' to extract hydrogen directly from gasoline, methanol, natural gas... or other fuels.

This is simply for economic reasons, although the oil companies undoubtedly want to influence and perhaps 'manage' the transition in the economy to these more efficient power sources for transportation.

(Events may surprise them, however. One recent startling development is a new type of 'photo-cel' that produces hydrogen directly from water when it is exposed to sunlight! If this technology proves out, the oil companies may be pressured.)
