"Need by definition" is accurate. I am not sure how well it serves as description, or analysis by observation, of the experience for many people. Maybe the study suggested by the article could find ways to describe the experiences and associated behaviors in more functional terms. Need, in itself, is not a negative definition, depending on the purpose behind its use. But often the reason for need definitions has been a condescending dismissal. I don't mind describing myself as needing something, or even being needy, but I listen closely when others talk in those terms.
