Russia says 'Nyet!' to US-UK proposal on Iraq

March 08 2003 at 11:02AM

Moscow - Russian Foreign Minister Igo Ivanov slammed the amended draft United Nations resolution that sets a March 17 deadline for Iraq to disarm as an unnecessary and unjustified ultimatum, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported Saturday.

"These kind of ultimatums are unjustified," Ivanov told Russian reporters at the UN headquarters in New York, after the United States and Britain urged a quick adoption of the proposal that would have Iraq disarm by the appointed deadline or face war.

"There is still a chance for a political resolution and we think it would be wrong and dangerous to ignore it. The other way is fraught not only with high toll in human lives, but serious international consequences as well," Ivanov warned.

Earlier on Saturday, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov voiced Russia's firm intent not to let the resolution pass the Security Council, where Russia holds veto power.

The amendment submitted on Friday seeks to have the UN declare that Iraq will be deemed to have failed to disarm "unless, on or before March 17, the Council concludes that Iraq has demonstrated full, unconditional, immediate and active cooperation" with UN inspectors. - Sapa-AFP
