You as the evangelical lawyer or doctor know better, know that sometimes you have to kill somebody to save them. For anyone who is interested in the ridicule of evangelicals in our society, I'd recommend you to the latest round of Survivor, the reality series. One of the contestants, JoAnna, who was voted off this week, is almost a caricature of an evangelical, except that she's a real person. She did a lot of damage to the social acceptance of evangelicals. If you haven't seen the show (yes, Chris, I know you haven't) you can read about her here:

There are several articles about her. They have an edge of ridicule about them as did the comments of her fellow contestants. Evangelicals may be 40 percent of the population, but they sure weren't 40 percent of the contestants. She deserved everything she got, best I could tell. She is a big a horse's ass as I have ever seen in life. And she's not a horse's ass who happens to be an evangelical--she's a born-again horse's ass. What a piece of work!
It wasn't so much her constant "Praise the Lord"s or verse quoting or haranguing her fellows about their evil ways but that she just wasn't a nice person. A couple of examples. She preached at her team mates all night while they were begging her to let them sleep. She picked a fight with a deaf woman on the team, coping this pose and attitude where she had her hand in the woman's face in a stop gesture, which, in addition to it's rudeness, had the effect of inhibiting the poor woman from reading JoAnna's lips. And the coup de grace: she fussed about having the "immunity idol" in camp because it was an "idol." For those not familiar with the show, they have a statuette that they give the winning team to keep until the other team wins it back. It's all in good fun. It's no more an idol than is a monopoly piece.
Now, if that's what it means to be an evangelical in today's society, well, please, Lord, spare us from them.
The gimick in this latest round of survivor was to put the women on one team and the men on another. It might be interesting to see a whole team of evangelicals. Politically incorrect, I know, but potentially interesting. <g> |
