Thank you. Very interesting. But…it must be remembered that many participants on the international stage may be driven by considerations other than power plays and pecking orders. Indeed, our current nemesis – the militant fundamental islamists – seem to be primarily interested in radicalizing Muslims all over the world, with the intent of capturing political power in their respective countries – so that they would be able to radicalize them even further… In a sense, they challenge the current “Hegemon” – indeed, they use “him” – in order to forward their own “internal” political goals.

Nazis wanted to shake off the civilizing – or, in their view, enslaving – influences of the Judeo-Christian religious tradition. Al Qaida was not only “emboldened” by the lack of an adequate response to the bombings of the embassies and the attack on the USS Cole – such a lack of response basically made it necessary for them to attack us again. Why? Because they need us to wage attacks against what may be seen as Muslim targets – so that they could advance the process of radicalizing Muslims – until the current extremists will find themselves being “mainstream” – AND in power.

It is worthwhile and enriching to study the philosophical structure of American political thinking – but it is crucial to remember that people and groups and nations are often driven more by emotions than by rational – or just power – considerations. An essay like the one by Stuart Slade may be more reflective of our own political scene rather than of the real life passions of war and peace.
