We are mice, plural ... for each nation to think of itself as 'the mouse' is to hand over the future to the 'wishes of the bully on the block' ... that is why México should emulate Canadá in foreign affairs, not the other way round [C could do a far better job as well, as it used to do, double the defense budget for a start] ... in union there is strength - get enough mice working together, and the power of the gorilla is balanced
The problem of the day is unilateralism, it is the only major problem we have .... the crimes of Saddam Hussein can be summarised under the charge of being a unilateralist - he has unilaterally murdered, unilaterally tortured, unilaterally invaded, unilaterally threatened, etc .... the proposed crimes under this 'Bush doctrine' can also be summarised under the charge of threatening unilateralism, stating as it does that the entire planet must take unilateral orders from the gorilla
There is a responsibility on the part of the mice here, to treat these separate crimes equally, to write legislation that treats them in even-handed manner, to prepare themselves for enforcement of that legislation, and to get real good at diplomacy real fast, learn to get along with each other and to make enough sense to convince the majority of the citizens of the gorilla that it is in their interests to support a campaign against the crime of unilateralism
There is a responsibility to recognise that while clearly the greater danger du jour to us all is the unilateralism of the gorilla, that of the Saddam Husseins is merely latent, they lack only the weaponry to become gorillas on their own, they definitely have the desire and intent ..... so we must listen to the gorilla du jour when it is making valid points, and respond with thoughtfulness, advancing always the cause of working together
To do this we need an international parliament that works .... the UN is a joke in many respects, the most whacko Pat Buchanans of the gorilla make good and valid points on why .... it is absurd that caudillos of some little two-bit dictatorship get the same weight in voting as a democratic nation such as Denmark
How about an U.D.? ... United Democracies ... dictators and gorillas given guest/observer status only, until they straighten up their act and observe community standards of behaviour ... law abiding mice only, and mice with big sharp teeth too, the better to smile with |
