<<<India has the one of the most corrupt, paperwork-laden business climates in the world. Its one thing to outsource labor there, quite another to try to actually start a business.>>
For proof, go to Walmart and see if you can see anything manufactured in USA. China leads the list of mfgs.

Honestly, I can't tell if you are serious or joking.

The principle (that I thought pretty much everyone understood) is that the lowest value-add services are best exported. Things that are costly in terms of time and material, with no leverage to the top line. Raw programming is like that, now. Same with assembly line manufacturing. The profit is in the IP. So if you go into walmart and buy a *US* product, which has componentry in it that is chinese then I would say the net effect is a positive for US businesses. Taking Dell or intel as an example, all the profit resides in Dell corp. The taiwanese producers of the boards and components in the product get nothing really... they are dueling it out in the low end.

The software companies in the US need cheap labor to grow, unfortunately there is this painful process which we are going through right now where a bunch of highly paid employees are getting displaced. But the long term trend is a benefit... I thought we learned this with the auto industry. You cannot protect a workforce that is paid 1000% more than the ROW and survive... partner with these people and the net effect is a good one.

I know I'd rather have US workers doing design vs. assemply line or textile work, wouldn't you? Assembly line manufacturing is an arcane field.
