The problem is that in software, it is the developers who often know the IP aspects the best. On the other hand, the auto assembly worker probably know nothing more than a screw is different from a wrench.

By outsourcing IT projects, we directly help other countries develop this strategic industry which will compete against us in a much shorter time frame than other industries.

I think it's a safer bet to turn H1-Bs into one of us than help improve the competition.

I hear that- but there is nothing we can do if we want to sell products globally. The customers that have to maintain this software will just offshore it, or hire their own people- anything really, which will cost less than silicon valley workers pumping out code.

The sad fact is, that Java and internet made this stuff into a commodity. In the past if you had say, Oracle knowledge you could only get it if 1)you worked at Oracle, 2)you worked in a shop that had oracle. With java there are tutorials for anybody right on the web. And you can't overpay commodity people and expect to remain in business- your competition (who may well be foreign) will take you out.

I am one that thinks the outsourcing trend is backlashing right about now though. I think too much has been outsourced (entire depts- that won't work) and now that companies see the quality vs. expense of one of these endeavors they aren't as interested. US people are cheaper too now. Probably the call centers and support will stay offshore but I'll bet some development comes back.
