As I said, a nice fellow with good intentions. However, a really terrible president who mismanaged the hostage crisis with Iran, the US economy, and had very few leadership qualities. I remember his Moral Equivalent of War (MEOW) program for fighting inflation, his "turn down the thermostate" pronouncements, etc., all of which were maudlin, in my opinion.

In my view, the fact that he is a nuclear scientist--though I don't know to what extent--does not grace him with wisdom.

His mother was a nice lady, too, but unfortunately it takes a lot more than good manners and good intentions to effectively run a country. Carter was a nightmare as a president. The US electorate recognized his failings and let him go after one term.
