Bob: I have received a response concerning the heat issue from Spatialight:

Dear Mr. Bush:

The spatial light modulator pixels are highly reflective aluminum with
specialized coatings. The reflectivity of this surface is over 99%. This is extremely efficient. Imagine a 35mm slide in a slide projector. A completely transparent slide is far less than 90% transmissive, meaning that 10% of the flux is absorbed. It does not burn up as the moderate slide projector light intensities. Our chip can handle over 40 times that light flux without any cooling at all.
Because the chip is reflective, it can be cooled effectively from the
backside. This means that a thermo-electric cooler or heat sink can be
placed under the silicon chip when very high light levels are required.
Hughes-JVC and Ampro corp. both use reflective liquid crystal light
valves in very high power projectors. These projectors operate at the
levels required for large audiences (movie theaters).
In summary, liquid crystal light valves (spatial light modulators) are
very well suited for this type of high power projection.

So, I'd like to bounce this off of you again, Bob. I believe that Dean is saying the majority of the energy is bounced off of the silicon with very little heat transfer.
