Nikkei hits fresh 20-year low, big banks dive Sunday March 9, 11:29 pm ET
(Updates to mid-afternoon)
TOKYO, March 10 (Reuters) - Tokyo's Nikkei average was hovering at fresh two-decade lows in mid-afternoon trade on Monday on speculation that war in Iraq was imminent and after the government said North Korea had fired a missile towards the Sea of Japan.
As of 0403 GMT, the Nikkei (^N225 - News) was down 1.45 percent or 118.23 points at 8,025.89, after falling as low as 7,975.36, below the key 8,000 level for the first time since March 1983. The broader TOPIX (^TOPX - News) index was down 1.63 percent at 783.17.
Traders were talking about a report on the Yomiuri Shimbun's newswire that the government would draft an emergency package in light of the tumbling stock market, but said the article was not lifting the market because of rising geopolitical concerns.
