The real question is WTF was the West thinking when they sold WMDs to Saddam and turned a blind eye on the oldest arms treaty in the world (i.e. use of chemical weapons). Iran's resolve in pursuit of such weapons is the direct result of what went on during the 80s...so be careful what you ask for today, because 10-20 years from now we may find ourselves with some very hard problems.
