It's called offering someone hope, i.e. the party never ends when you're dead. Don't you think it would depress people if the pope came out and said, "your life here is miserable torment, and when you die there is nothing at all" Would Islam be able to carry on? Of course not, one offers hope to the suffering of eternal paradise with lots of wine and women to keep them in line here.
