Unlike EDGE and GPRS overlays, both of which reduce voice capacity, GSM1x adds it. Voice is still the preeminent application.

In a similar vein, GSM1X might well give the Europeans some incentive to accelerate their UMTS efforts.

One would think so. However, GSM voice capacity problems will be relieved to some extent by smart antennas and other gizmos. It will never be the same as 1x, which clearly outclasses it.

For a real laugher in which the GSM bunch claims that the capacity-adding gizmos will result in GSM having higher voice capacity than 1x, find a white paper by Ryzavy at Pravda, er, I mean the GSM web page. I would do it for you but I don't have it handy and don't have the time. I'll PM it to you later in the day.
