I generally cart my stuff to the Salvation Army. They have a very convenient and efficient drop-off. I don't know what happens to it after they get it--whether the workers steal it or it goes in the thrift shop or the local shelters or the landfill. The drop-off is almost as convenient that putting it outside in the trash so I don't ask any questions and I can feel good about doing my civic duty.

One of the local TV stations maintains a list of which charities want specific things like eyeglasses or blankets so I save such things and donate them wherever they're requested.

I give away a lot of good stuff, stuff that others might sell on ebay, antiques, even, but I'm too lazy.
