But that "appearance" (as you are well aware by your post) stems from a desire to safeguard fundamental human values. That appearance, IMO, comes from protecting outsiders from bullies. If the bullies would just leave others alone to do their own thing, then there would be no appearance of nurturing what may not be optimal behavior but which is not a danger to anyone else.
