Clare Short, the international development secretary, told the BBC, "I will not uphold a breach of international law or this undermining of the U.N. and I will resign from this government."

She called Mr. Blair's position on Iraq "extraordinarily reckless" for the United Nations and also his own political future.

I have to respect her standing on principle in spite of the fact I think it will do little good. Bush and Blair seem hell bent on making the UN irrelevant. Its not unlike two kids trashing the neighborhood fort because the rest of the kids won't play their way.

I am embarrassed for the image of the US Bush is presenting to the world. It flies in the face of everything we have stood for these past 100 years. All the work that has been done to make the UN a creditable organization; and Bush acts as if its a major inconvenience. Its very sad!
