The reports of bonding powers of religion in the West are highly exaggerated...it never prevented Europeans from killing each other either.

Many parts of the world are moving closer to religion. This is a global trend that I'd be surprised if China bucks. Whatever flavor of Buddhism you choose, the principles of compassion remain the same. These principles prevent a person (or government) from using force especially against what is a pacifist resistance. I disagree with your view about absorption. Unlike genetics and objects, ideas cannot be "neutralized" by population growth...in any event, I doubt we will come to any conclusion on this...let's pick it up in 30 years :)
