Many parts of the world are moving closer to religion. This is a global trend that I'd be surprised if China bucks. Whatever flavor of Buddhism you choose, the principles of compassion remain the same. These principles prevent a person (or government) from using force especially against what is a pacifist resistance. I disagree with your view about absorption. Unlike genetics and objects, ideas cannot be "neutralized" by population growth...in any event, I doubt we will come to any conclusion on this...let's pick it up in 30 years :) ST
