Don,
I dont think the number of users is the challenge here as far as searching goes, it is the messages.

Sure, if a user ID has never posted, delete it. It might improve the search against user id's, slightly.

The challenge is searching the millions of variable length messages. By thread, by poster, by date, by keyword, etc...the indexes will quickly become larger than the raw data. And Google has raised people's expectations of what "search" means!
