I'd accept slightly stale results (i.e. from yesterday back) over slow response times.

18M messages, how many searchable words you think that is? (Excluding "a' "the" "duh" etc.)

If I built a search key of every searchable word from every message plus message ID, subject ID, poster ID, that would still be not much bigger than a breadbox. But you wouldn't want to pay for that insert at Submit time...
