Personally, I don't sweat the expense of inserts, especially if part of the cost is to make reads cheaper.

Taken in the context of the big picture, inserts are very rare.

I'm currently using the full-text indexing built into SQL Server and the CONTAINS() function. It works but it's full of shortcomings and will have to be replaced in a few years because it doesn't look like it'll be workable when dealing with several million messages.

I think I'm averaging about 4 seconds for a search right now although I'm also running on about 1/4 the horsepower that's currently readily available.
