OT: I would submit that Poole is far from right on and unfortunately adds no value to the tired diatribe on FRE/FNM, and the implicit guarantee. Every company the size of the GSE's is a disaster waiting to happen. Citibank, JPM, anyone???

& the old argument that they hold less capital than banks --last time I checked, Freddie was not taking losses on their Enron/Worldcom position or Argentina like the banks were, thus the comparison is difficult at best.

Yes, refinances are way up given low rates, but are cash-out refis increasing (I honestly do not know the answer here)? The argument on whether there is or is not residential bubble is interesting on both sides (yes credit costs have increased). But importantly Poole does not discuss the steps FRE/FNMA have taken to manage the credit risks in their portfolios such as reinsurance etc..
