Lawmaker apologizes to Jewish groups for Iraq remarks

-- Rep. Jim Moran, D-Virginia, is in hot water with Jewish groups for comments he made at a recent anti-war forum.

"If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this," Moran said at the forum in Reston, Virginia, outside Washington last Monday. "The leaders of the Jewish community are influential enough that they could change the direction of where this is going and I think they should."

The leader of the Jewish Community Council of Washington criticized Moran for the remarks.

"The Jewish community is deeply offended," said Ronald Halber, executive director of the JCC, explaining that no one group has that much influence over U.S. foreign policy.
