Next to "scientific" statistics, polls are the best tool to make one's view look legitimate. They are just as prone to misuse. I wish Time had printed the questions so we could tell for ourselves what people really said. Just like the GIGA principle in data processing, in polls if you ask the wrong questions you will get the wrong answers. I know of polls are quite to the contrary. I have not posted them because they also did not publish their questions.

Here are some of the highlights from the poll you site:

- A majority of Americans say the White House has failed to tell them what they need to know about the justification for a pre-emptive attack.

- majority of respondents, 52 percent, say inspectors should be given more time

- 43 percent said that ousting Mr. Hussein was not worth "the potential loss of American life and other costs," compared with 50 percent who said it was.

- Americans remain perplexed about what Mr. Bush is doing and why he is doing it

.

They sound like a big distance from support for what Bush has in mind. IMO, 55% is still about and even divide. Yet through out the article it is treated as an absolute and strong majority.

The article also took a pro war tone in the most subliminal way. It's title and its early paragraphs are all about why there is support for war while items such as The findings are nevertheless not a green light for Mr. Bush, who wants to set a deadline of March 17 for Mr. Hussein to comply with the United Nations. The poll found that 60 percent of respondents wanted the administration to take the views of allies into account are left to the very end.
