Tough 2002 Reshuffles Chip Supplier Market Shares as They Play the Second Round of Semiconductor 'Survivor'

iSuppli Releases Semiconductor Market Shares for 2002

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- While the 1.5 percent growth in semiconductor industry revenues in 2002 was far better than the disastrous 31.7 percent slide experienced in 2001, major changes again occurred in the market share rankings of leading semiconductor suppliers.

"It was clearly a game of 'Survivor' for the semiconductor industry in 2002, with some contestants being severely penalized by the market," said Dale Ford director of market intelligence services at iSuppli and co-creator of the company's comprehensive Competitive Landscaping Tool (CLT).

If the semiconductor market in 2002 were an episode of television's "Survivor," one-half of the top 30 contestants would be on the verge of getting voted off the island.

"It is not surprising in a relatively flat revenue growth year that 15 companies were up while 15 were down in our top 30 rankings. The latest data from our CLT also shows that five 'survivor' companies in our top 30 supplier listing that experienced double-digit revenue increases were focused on market segments with solid demand profiles throughout 2002, while five other 'at-risk' companies in our top 30 found themselves serving markets where slack demand and falling ASPs were the rule with resulting double-digit declines in revenues," Ford noted.

Ford indicated that the 'survivors' were led by Samsung Electronics, which posted an impressive 43 revenue percent gain thanks to strong DRAM and Flash memory sales, and jumped from the number four position to number two. nVidia, which posted a better than 44 percent revenue gain on strong graphics chip sales into an otherwise flat PC marketplace and ramping video game console sales, moved up six places to rank 24th. In addition, CDMA leader QUALCOMM achieved a revenue gain of more than 39 percent to move up five places to the 23rd slot. Infineon Technologies and Micron Technology both benefited from the DRAM turnaround to post revenue increases of more than 17 percent.

"The 'at-risks' were led by Agere Systems, whose continued focus on wired communications led to a more than 30 percent revenue decline, Ford said, followed by AMD who lost the microprocessor battle to Intel and posted revenues down nearly 30 percent. Other double-digit revenue declines were posted by Atmel, IBM Microelectronics and Fujitsu."

"Our top 30 semiconductor supplier listing is just one of literally billions of data sets that can be extracted from our customizable market share database using our newly-enhanced Competitive Landscaping Tool (CLT). Using the CLT, marketing and purchasing professionals can customize data extracts to show market share information for more than 170 companies, across more than 100 semiconductor market segments, and view the data by segment, company, region, and/or application market. The CLT is a 'must have' tool for analyzing the semiconductor competitive landscape," said Ford.
