I know Buffett says he doesn't buy technology stocks because he doesn't understand them, but I suspect he understands technology, in general, more than he lets on. What I'm saying is that he understands that most technology is short-lived and that it is always susceptible to the next new thing. For an investor whose preferred holding period is "forever," it's hard to find the kinds of franchises in technology that he finds buying furniture stores or Coke that can last for multiple decades. What is there in technology that rivals this? Microsoft perhaps?
