If you want to see the perks and privileges that go with the possession of nukes, look no further than the narrow list of permanent members of the UN security council (China, France, Russia, UK and US). They're not there because of their form of government or their virtue, but because of the nuclear power they possess. Call it realpolitik if you like, but it's an exclusive club. They all "respect" one another enough to grant each other a permanent veto on collective decision-making, and it is in their mutual interest to preserve their oligopoly for as long as possible.
