Although the subject of HP's patent is fiber optic faceplates, the intended substitution of LC with SPD are for nearly the precise reasons, namely, the advantages that SPD can provide as Research Frontiers has outlined, and therefore believes why SPD can compete with LCD in the broader LC display market.

Cutting edge technology is ususally relegated to speciality products or niche markets were the utility can least be ignored, and trickle down in time. Forget for a moment that HP's patent invovles fiber optic faceplates as that is the means to collect the image, and focus on the monitor that actually displays. In this case, LC has limited the adjoining technology.

The LC display manufacturers are currently cranking out displays in a fierce battle to survive and expand in the hope of actually profiting some day, and retain a sustainable market share. Any advantage once recognized, made acceptable and usually born of necessity, can result in adoption of innovation. SPD is probably a less painful option than OLED and the key ingrediant, lots and lots of film of the right kind of doesn't seem all that far off. I'm thinking within a few years, and HP thought it worthwhile to pursue now.
