In some ways, yes.
This is, of course, an entirely hypothetical situation: nobody is going to offer Israel the option of statehood. But the fight against terrorists is one that the Israelis believe they can win, and preserve their State according to the principles on which it was founded. If they tried to integrate themselves into a nation dedicated to the principle that all men are created equal, Israel as they know it would effectively cease to exist. Very simply it would no longer be - could no longer be - The Jewish State.

Which case are we talking about here? Take the time to look seriously at the entire policy matrix the Israelis have constructed to deal with the Palestinians, and ask yourself how much of it would stand up under US law. My guess would be not much. Maybe none.
Again, of course, the whole question is hypothetical to a degree that makes it hardly worth discussing, particularly given the amount of reality staring us in the face. |
