Re: Was there ever an African dictator the French didn't adore? The Dutch criticize America's military as trigger-happy, but their own troops didn't fire a shot in defense of the Muslims of Srebrenica, who they had been tasked to protect and whose slaughter was the worst single massacre on European soil since the end of the Second World War...

You may have a point here....

As the Guardian article suggests, the French are championing the "Arab cause" not so much out of fondness for the Arabs as of a ploy to use the Arab steppingstone to restore France's geopolitical clout... Likewise, French public opinion got inflamed about an eventual war on Iraq not out of empathy with the Arabs but rather out of its deep-rooted anti-Americanism. Hence I agree with you that, somehow, France cynically uses the Arab pawn to jockey for position on the geopolitical chessboard....

Arab countries would delude themselves if they read too much into "Old Europe"'s posture over the Iraq crisis... If anything, Arabs could as well ask Turkey about Europe's misgivings vis-a-vis Islam and her Muslim neighbors....
