In light of the fact that the main dispute is over land which was seized during a war, we could analogize to similar disputes between the US and Mexico over California, etc.

Under US law at the time, we took it, so it's ours. Even today a lot of Mexicans don't like it, but there's no way they could prevail in court. Not in a US court, anyway.
