Because the US is on the one hand saying that it wants to go through the UN - and is resorting to bribery and threats to get its way - but if it doesn't get its way it will pick up its marbles and attack Iraq on its own - and its Commander in Chief (who can only act with a teleprompter it seems or at scripted news conferences) will brand the UN as 'irrelevant'. This from a country which is consistently behind with its payments to the UN. In the short space of a year and a half this Government has lost the good will of its traditional allies. Those of us who don't live in the States have to remind ourselves of the many Americans who we know, or have met, and who we like. But it's reassuring that a large number of Americans hate ths gang too and are profoundly embarrased by Bush to the very bottom of their souls. And he has the affrontery to invoke God in what he plans to do - the destruction he is going to bring to Iraq. Pretext after pretext is being dragged out and if they don't wash, other ones are brought to the table.

As someone wrote the other day 'there are two Superpowers now - the US and world opinion' Too true and at least we have that comfort.
