I did not take any offense. I do try to understand people and give them the benefit of the doubt. You are more right in your understanding of my actions than not. I tried hard to use logic to show Fred that legislating prejudice is not a good idea. And he just refused to see it just as he refuses to see the point about what the UN mandate really is. Seeing how logic has failed, I thought to give him an emotional jolt to open his eyes. I figured there was plenty of similarities between mistreatment of Muslim immigrants here and mistreatment of Jews elsewhere. So if Fred could see these similarities, he could see why these laws are wrong.

But I didn't want to compare Bush to Hitler. This would have exaggerated the facts, downplayed the injustice of WWII and would have been insensitive. So instead I pointed out that there are parts of the world, like Iran, where the state has reasons to believe Jews are sympathetic with its enemies. I asked that he puts the shoe on the other foot and picture Jews instead of Muslims under the same type of arguments that Bush uses against Muslims in America. The whole point was that the emotional response from such an image would open Fred's eyes to seeing why these laws are wrong. But instead he went on a name calling rampage and got it mixed up with justifying nazis. As his last response to me shows, he still thinks that I am somehow talking about the Vichy government or justifying abuse in Iran, where in fact I am taking a stand against the abuse everywhere including here in America. My underestimation of his sensitivity and his ability to imagine such a terrible prospect was a tactical flaw. There are battles that are best not fought.

let's move on,
Sun Tzu
