High time to form United Muslim Nations: Pak expert
Islamabad, March 12, IRNA -- It is high time the Islamic world formed
a United Muslim Nations (UMN) to safeguard their collective interests,
said a member of the Pakistan Parliament here on Wednesday.
Abbas Kumaili, an MP, told IRNA here at Parliament House that the
survival of the dignity of Islamic nations lay in their unity which,
he said, necessitated the creation of UMN, not the United Nations.
He cautioned that as long as Muslims remained divided and looked
to the UN for solutions to their problems, they would continue to
experience difficulties.
It would be very practical, he urged, for Islamic countries to
shun their differences of opinion, come out of the unrealistic US
bloc and establish their own identity.
"History bears testimony to the fact that the UN has miserably
failed to address the issues concerning the Muslim world. Therefore,
it is vital to form UMN," he maintained.
The Pakistan Parliament comprises the National Assembly (Lower
House) and the Senate (Upper House). Abbas Kumaili is member of the
Senate.
"The 56 Muslim nations should be transformed into a viable and
effective platform, protecting not only Islamic countries but also
the other weaker nations from aggression," the analyst suggested.
Abbasi Kumaili said he did not see any reason why Muslim countries
could not unite if in recent times European countries have been able
to forge unity to safeguard their economic and political interests.
"They have even introduced a common currency, the euro," he
pointed out.
Singling out Iran while citing a poetic verse by the great poet
and philosopher, Allama Mohammad Iqbal, he said that Tehran was in a
very good position to play a leading role in uniting the Islamic
world.
To a question, he said he believes that oppressed nations all
over the world should have the courage to stand up before imperialist
nations.
"The US could be stopped from committing aggression if the Muslim
countries and the European countries join hands," he asserted, adding
that this was the only possible way to protect weaker nations.
He pointed out that a sign of awakening was visible with
traditional allies of the US vehemently opposing military action
against Iraq.
"This awakening must be cashed in to end America's hegemony," he
emphasized.
Abbas Kumaili welcomed the huge anti-war demonstrations in major
cities in different countries around the world. He said the entire
global environment was opposed to a US war on Baghdad.
"If the Muslim countries and the countries in Europe and elsewhere
failed to exploit the anti-US sentiment, the world may not find such a
rare opportunity in decades," he noted.
