I read a research paper on this once and you are only half right. The paper concluded that for the top tier analysts it is best to do exactly as you have pointed out. However, new comers can only make a name for themselves and join the top tiers if they were to take controversial positions that would prove them right. So for them it is best to stand out and be wrong than not to be noticed at all. Once they make it to the top, their "insight" seems to disappear within a few years.
