Hi jp. I guess what I mean is for the last 10000 years man has held onto the idea that he was written into God's script. The idea that God sets fate, and fate rules us completely. The idea that Mankind is alone in shaping his destiny, and the destiny of all the critters in our neighborhood, is revolutionary. It is an idea, an overarching mythos, whose power is not easily forgotten or surrendered. The Middle Ages took a long time not primarily for economic reasons, but also for reasons of worldview. The major intellectual pursuit was to try to understand the closed theocentric universe of Aristotle and Augustine. "Busting that open" to a heliocentric and ultimately acentric concept is ongoing. It means we're very small souls alone in a big place, but at the same time it puts the power over, and the responsibility for, our corner of the cosmos in our hands. If society collapses in a big way, restoring an oldtimey closedview of the world, with its attendant ethic of decadence (vs. progress), will be imho unlikely.
